Bird Seed Madonna 2013

Animal fat and ground seeds, H 175 cm, photos: Griet Dobbels

The Birdseed Madonna resembles a classical sandstone sculpture (a

life size copy of a statue in Rheims Cathedral), but is actually made of

birdseed and fat. It slowly disappears while being eaten by birds. It

questions Western society’s tendency to immortalise itself in statues,

the signs of power and grandeur.

Bird Seed Madonna was realised in:

1998 as part of Beelden BuitenTielt (B),

2000 for the Secret Gardens arts festival, London (GB),

2010 at the Verbeke Foundation, Kemzeke (B),

2013 for the exhibition Badly Natured at Nest, The Hague (NL).
